Adelaide’s second Ronald McDonald House is set to open its doors late May 2011.

Ronald McDonald House Adelaide is a safe haven for rural families needing accommodation and support while their seriously ill child is receiving treatment at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

It is a House of care and understanding, and a place where children feel safe, happy and loved.

Within six months of opening in January 2000, the first Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in South Australia, located on Melbourne Street in North Adelaide, was at full capacity and a waiting list was established.

Since then, the House has provided accommodation and support to over 2000 families. The House is limited to accommodating only ten families at any one time, and regularly sleeps 30 to 40 people per night. There is a long waiting list of others needing help.

The demand for accommodation at the House is predicted to rise with the rationalisation of medical services in rural areas leading to a growing number of children requiring treatment at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Advances in medical research and the resulting greater survival rates of children with serious medical conditions means longer treatment programs that will also contribute to a rise in demand at the House.

Based on these factors, Ronald McDonald House Charities Adelaide worked to raise money and acquire land for a second House directly opposite the current House on Melbourne Street.

Following this, Ronald McDonald House Charities Adelaide launched a building appeal to raise funds and secure support to build the new $5.3 million House.

Ronald McDonald House manager, Jane Scotcher, says the new House will double the capacity, bringing the number of families they can accommodate each night to twenty.

“This would not have happened if it weren’t for the buy in and support from the South Australian community – business, communities, individuals and organisations came together to support the project by providing funds and in-kind support,” says Jane.

“This is going to make an enormous difference to the families who need accommodation while their child is receiving treatment at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.”

The new House will incorporate eight two-bedroom apartments, two cottages, an outdoor playground, peace garden and a gym, which can be used by families from both sites. The new House has been designed to better cater for the needs of families staying longer than three months.

Ronald McDonald House is looked after by a dedicated team of more than 70 volunteers who lend their time to assist with the upkeep of the House. Some volunteers even travel from regional South Australia to Adelaide to work at the House.

While the House is finalised and ready to open in May 2011, there is still a need for the new home to be furnished.

To meet this need, Ronald McDonald House Adelaide launched an appeal calling upon South Australians to help them furnish the new home.

The Red Door Appeal, which has been set up like a gift registry, allows people to donate as little or as much as they like to cover the cost of everything from tea towels and glasses to beds and televisions.

The appeal is aiming to raise more than $80,000 to ensure the new House feels homely for children and their families who need to call Adelaide home for longer than three months.

The Red Door Appeal is hoping to attract both private and business donors with IKEA, Bosch, Fisher & Paykel, Oates, Sunbeam, Sealy and International Linen Service already making contributions to the furnishing of the home.

People can donate to the Red Door Appeal via the website www.reddoorappeal.com.au or by calling RMH Adelaide on 08 8267 6922.
