With a baby boom of its very own, 2011 expects to see a five per cent increase in pregnancies nationwide following the introduction of the paid parental leave plan, prompting chiropractors to remind expectant mothers of the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy and post childbirth.

The President of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia South Australia – Dr Brett Hill says, “Chiropractic care can provide reduced pain during pregnancy, shorten labour times, and help with babies’ growth and progress.”

Studies by international industry experts found that first time mothers not receiving chiropractic care, experienced on average a 14 hour labour time, whereas those who had received chiropractic care, the mean labour time was only eight hours. For women having subsequent births, the average labour time decreased from nine hours to four to five hours respectively.[1]

“Chiropractic care can help reduce the need for interventions (such as caesarean sections) by correcting misalignments and imbalances in the pelvic muscles, ligaments and bones, and can prepare a woman’s body in the best possible position for birth,” Dr Hill says.

65 per cent of brain and nervous system development occurs in the first year of a child, therefore it is integral to make sure babies develop effective nerve function during this stage, and chiropractic care can contribute towards this development.[2]

Dr Hill adds, “We recommend having a newborn’s spine assessed early, as many common health complaints such as sleep disturbances and breastfeeding difficulties can be the result of spinal dysfunction; which have shown to respond well to chiropractic care.”

During pregnancy, a mother’s centre of gravity is shifted and the pelvic structure changes dramatically. After child birth, more and more mothers are also choosing to include a chiropractic check up as part of their post-birth recovery.
