The introduction of this policy and facilities sees IKEA Adelaide along with IKEA Perth become the first retailers in Australia to be Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace accredited.
The accreditation is in recognition of the policies put in place by the store to enable working mothers to continue breastfeeding their infants after returning to work.
IKEA Adelaide Store Manager Agneta Simon said we believe that every woman has the right to continue breastfeeding after returning to work.
“The breastfeeding initiative compliments other policies designed to help working mothers balance work and family commitments including paid parental leave and flexible working arrangements,” said Mrs Simon.
Initiatives put in place by the store to support breastfeeding mothers include:
Provision of suitable private facilities for mothers to breastfeed or express.
Providing breastfeeding or expressing breaks of up to an hour based on an eight hour working day. Breaks are pro-rated for co-workers working shorter shifts.
Ensuring co-worker awareness and acceptance of breastfeeding policies and facilities.
Providing information to pregnant co-workers about combining breastfeeding or expressing milk at work.
The Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace Accreditation (BFWA) is a consultancy service for employers provided by the Australian Breastfeeding Association.
Through the accreditation process, BFWA assists employers to create a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers returning to work from maternity leave.
