Be enchanted by the playful and beautiful world of White presented by Adelaide Festival Centre and Windmill Theatre from 31 January – 11 February.
A performance for young children and their families White is the imaginative and moving story of two friends, Wrinkle and Cotton who look after bird houses and keep the eggs safe. In an orderly, bright world that gleams and shines with white, the friends watch and help… until one day when, high up in the trees, some colourful surprises begin to appear.
Scottish theatre company Catherine Wheels is a leading producer of theatre for children and young people. Formed in 1999 by director Gill Robertson, the Company has firmly established itself as a producer of entertaining and inventive theatre for children. Their first production, Martha, has performed in theatres throughout the UK, Ireland and North America, including the New Victory Theatre in New York. In 2008 Martha won the award for Best Production at the Shanghai International Children’s Festival, and in 2009 performed at the Singapore International Children’s Festival and the Australian Ten Days on the Island Festival in Tasmania. Lifeboat (2002), which won the Barclays Stage Award for Best Show for Children and Young People, has performed at the New Victory Theatre, been part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the New Zealand International Arts Festival, as well as being the first production by a Scottish children’s theatre company at the Sydney Opera House.
White – the company’s first show for children under 4 years – premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2010, and won 3 awards – a Fringe First, Herald Angel and a Total Theatre Award. The show was also nominated for a Stage award, and most recently won the prestigious 2011 Theatre Award UK for ‘Best Show for Children and Young People’.
Director Gill Robertson said “We are thrilled with the award for White. It’s a show we are very proud of and worked hard to make. We’re delighted that theatre for early year’s audiences is getting this level of recognition.”
Windmill Theatre Artistic Director Rosemary Myers says “White is a very special show and like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It captivates audiences by gently drawing them into its wonderful world. Having seen this international hit for under fives in Edinburgh earlier this year, Windmill is thrilled to partner with the Festival Centre to present it to Adelaide audiences as part of its first international tour”.
“Ingeniously designed by Shona Reppe, the production, directed by Gill Robertson, abounds in visual surprises. One hue after another surreptitiously invades the scene, much to small children’s delight.” The New York Times
“One of Scotland’s top theatre groups for children” The Scotsman
